In the 21st century, the rapid developments in high tech and new materials result in the new generation of materials fabrication and processing technology. New materials and improvements made on the traditional materials, novel methods of materials processing, innovative approaches of analyzing and characterizing materials, all emerged in the field of materials science and engineering, showing the characteristics of interdiciplinary and multidisciplinary. Based on the investigation on the liquid and solid structures of materials and their evolutions, the Lab aims at answering the fundamental scientific questions in materials science, and taking the technological challengies in materials engineering. The main research activities include design of new materials, investigation of new structure and new properties of materials, development of new facilities, new methods and new materials, improvements on the traditional materials, and green manufacturing by means of digital and integration techniques.
For the liquid structure and its heredity, the Lab focus its research activities on the liquid structures and thermal physical properties of metals, inorganic materials and polymers, which include the relationships between temperature, composition and viscosity, rheology of the liquids, surface tension, surface energy and wetting behavior, liquid-glass phase transition, the metastability of glasses and amorphous materials. The research of this area aims at establishing the theoretical foundation and providing the experimental approaches for the discovery of new materials and methods.
For design and preparation of new materials, the Lab’s research activities include exploring the correlations between the liquid and solid states of materials; developing new techonlogies in melting, sintering, polymerizing, wet spinning, etc, exploring new preparation and characterization methods of carbon fibers and nanomaterials; and creating new alloys, high modulus carbon fibers, advanced ...
