Prof. Liao is a full professor in the School of Aerospace, Mechanical & Mechatronic Engineering, the University of Sydney (USyd). He conducted his Master research on the structures of quasicrystal related crystalline approximants under the supervision of late professor Kehsin Kuo (郭可信院士)from 1988 to 1991. He received his PhD degree from the School of Physics in USyd in 2000 and then was offered an Australian Research Council (ARC) Australian Postdoctoral Fellowship. He moved to USA taking up a Director Funded Postdoctoral Fellowship in Los Alamos National Laboratory in 2001 and was a research scientist in the University of Chicago from 2004 to 2006. He returned to USyd in June 2006 as a lecturer. He was an ARC Queen Elizabeth II fellow from 2007 to 2011 and an ARC Future Fellow from 2012 to 2015. His research focuses on electron microscopy characterisation of advanced structural and functional materials. Current research projects include the deformation behavior and mechanical properties of bulk nanocrystalline metallic materials and nanowires, deformation behavior of metals with hexagonal close-packed structures, and effects of external stimulation (mechanical stressing and electrical biasing) on the domain structures of ferroelectric materials. He has published more than 210 journal articles which have been collectively cited ~ 8,300 times (data from Web of Science).
